Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
